Howard E. Wood, age 86, of 16 Third Street, Tupper Lake, died Sunday, August 07, 2011 at his home.
Born in Quaker Springs, New York on September 09, 1924, he was the son of Marshall and Hattie (Nickelbacker) Wood.
Howard had been employed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as a fire tower observer for 20 years. After his many years of service as a fire tower observer he worked at the Cranberry Lake Camp Grounds for several years as a caretaker until his retirement. Howard was drafted at the age of 18 into the United States Army and is a veteran World War II serving in the D-Day invasion and throughout Europe. He especially liked to work on his trucks and had built his own home in Tupper Lake. Prior to moving to Tupper Lake he had lived in Warrensburg and Saratoga Springs.
He is survived by one brother Nileland Wood of Gagnet, NY, several nieces and nephews, special friends Sharon Dukette and family of Tupper Lake, NY and Danny Otts of Tupper Lake, NY. He was predeceased by four brothers Marshall, Faye, Walter and Floyd Wood and one sister Delberta. He also was predeceased by his companion Jean Wood.
Calling hours will take place at Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A graveside service will take place at 12:30 PM on Thursday at Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
