Frederick Joseph Winderl, age 86, a born and bred native of Saranac Lake, NY, was escorted by angels into eternal life in the evening of September 15, 2023, surrounded by family members. He now resides in the heavenly realm with family and friends who were also believers in Jesus Christ and have gone before him.
Born on November 5, 1936 to Matthew and Eleanor Argenta Winderl (Tierney) in Saranac Lake, Fred and his brothers, Martin, and Robert lived in Saranac Lake, followed into the stone mason field like their father and were known throughout the Adirondacks for their artistry in the trade. His eldest brother, Matthew Jr., lived in Saranac Lake and Ogdensburg until his passing.
Frederick suffered the untimely loss of his mother at the age of 5, was raised solely by his father from that point on and met the love of his life, Sandra J. Winderl (Daudelin), also known as “the boss’s daughter”, while building a grocery store in Vermont. Their wedding was celebrated on May 14, 1960 at Saint Thomas Church in Underhill Center, Vermont, and the young couple raised 4 children in Saranac Lake.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, his children and their spouses: Sandra J. (Joseph E.) Fiorile of Saranac Lake, Konrad V. (Gail Duplisea) Winderl of Upland, CA, Fritz K. (Michele ) Winderl of Orlando, FL and Christina A. (Douglas) Mitchell of Elizabethtown, NY; five grandchildren and their spouses: Joseph (Faith) Fiorile, Gina Fiorile (Isaac) Desranleau, Maghan (Ahren) Wolson, Daniel (Kelly) Mitchell, and Andrew Mitchell and fiancee Abigail Burdo; three great-grandchildren: Nora and Opal Wolson and Ruth Mitchell as well as loving sister-in-law LaVaughn Winderl and many nieces and their husbands.
A lifelong member of Saint Bernard’s Parish, Fred lived a full and rewarding life filled with faith, integrity, strength, hard work and devotion to family and friends. He loved to laugh, play practical jokes and travel whenever possible as well as raising animals on the small homestead farm, gardening, fishing and continually making improvements on the home and family property.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY. Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday September 19, 2023 from 10:00am until 11:30am, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon at St. Bernard’s Church with the Reverend Martin Cline officiating, burial will immediately follow in St. Bernard’s cemetery in the family lot.
