William J. Walasky, age 82, of 34 Cortez Lane, Saranac Lake, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on April 30, 1929, he was the son of Joseph and Louisa (Dawson) Walasky. He married Harriett VonDell on July 25, 1967 in Burlington, VT. She predeceased him on April 20, 1997.
Willie owned and operated the Red Fox Restaurant in Saranac Lake for over 30 years. Prior to operating the restaurant, he was a driver for the Greyhound Bus Company for many years. Willie will be most remembered for being a professional musician. He became an accomplished professional on several instruments, his favorites being the piano and organ. Jazz was his favorite music, and he was described by fellow musicians as a “monster”, a term of great musical respect in Jazz circles. He even recorded his own album in 1968 called, “The Traveling Sounds” by the Willy Wall Trio. Willie provided music and other forms of great entertainment at the restaurant, and throughout New York and Vermont.
He is survived by one daughter Susan P Dwyer and her husband Dennis of Saranac Lake, one daughter-in-law Kim Walasky of Saranac Lake, three grandchildren Dennis Dwyer III and Shannon Gallo, both of Saranac Lake, and Kristen Walasky of Phoenix, AZ, and two great grandchildren Kaedance and Easton Gallo .
He is also survived by his companion of 14 years, Margaret M. Kilburn of Saranac Lake, NY. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and one son Robert W. Walasky, who passed away on May 18, 2006.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. At Willie’s request there will be no calling hours. An informal celebration of his life will take place at Captain Cooks in Saranac Lake on Friday March 2, 6:00 till 9:00 p.m.
