Olin Peter “Pete” Ten Eyck, 78, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully May 19, 2010 with family and close friends surrounding him at Bridgewater Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Binghamton, NY.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on June 20, 1931. He was predeceased by his parents Olin and Elizabeth (Mirick) Ten Eyck. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet (Scanlon) Ten Eyck, a daughter and son in law Linda and Richard Hollembaek of Lexington, KY, a son and daughter in law Eric and Mina Ten Eyck of Vestal, NY, grandchildren Rachel and Megan Hollembaek, Peter, Elizabeth, and Erica Ten Eyck, a sister Ann M Ten Eyck of Saranac Lake, NY, many other cousins and relatives and our close family friend Ted Libera of Liverpool, NY.
Peter attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School grades 2 – 8, graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1948. He attended and graduated from SUNY Maritime College, Fort Schyler, NY, as a Marine & Mechanical Engineer in 1953. Peter worked as Third Assistant Engineer for American Export & Line aboard the SS Constitution (Passenger Liner) from 1953 to 1955. He served active duty in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957 as Damage Control Officer and Chief Engineer. He served in the United States Navy Reserve from 1953 to 1963 and obtained the rank of LTJG. Peter worked for the Carrier Air Conditioning Corp. for 36 years as a service engineer, service manager, product engineer and project engineer in the large machinery division. He retired in 1993. He continued to work as a machinery consultant until 1996.
Retired life was busy for him and wife Janet with numerous trailer trips out west to their favorite spot, Leadville Colorado, and a cottage back east in their hometown of Saranac Lake, spending many happy summers enjoying the Adirondack mountains, reconnecting with their hometown. He attended every class reunion he could, both high school and college, and regularly attended gatherings of retired Carrier employees, enjoying the friendship and camaraderie of all of those groups. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping and snow skiing. He was an avid tinkering engineer at home as well, fixing many problems with ease for neighbors, friends and relatives in his large garage. He gave generously of his time to all who needed it. He was sought out for advice and counsel by many. He will be missed by all who encountered him, personally or professionally.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday May 27, 2010 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A bible vigil service will take place on Thursday at 3:45PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 PM on Friday May 28, 2010 at St. Bernard's Church with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
