Janet Ann Ten Eyck

Janet Ann (Scanlon) Ten Eyck, 79, of Syracuse, NY passed away peacefully January 5, 2011 surrounded by family at Good Sheperd Village nursing home near Binghamton, NY. Born in Saranac Lake, New York on March 9, 1931.She was predeceased by her parents Raymond and Muriel (Kirche) Scanlon and her husband Olin Peter “Pete” TenEyck. She is survived by, a daughter and son in law Linda and Richard Hollembaek of Lexington Kentucky , a son and daughter in law Eric and Mina Ten Eyck of Vestal, NY, grandchildren Rachel and Megan Hollembaek, Peter, Elizabeth, and Erica Ten Eyck.

Janet graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1949. She attended and graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1953 with a degree in elementary education. She taught second grade in Hamilton, NY from September 1953 until she married Olin Peter Ten Eyck in Saranac Lake, New York on February 23, 1957. Janet and Peter made their home in Tom’s River New Jersey, then Westfield New Jersey, and finally settling in Syracuse, New York for over 44 years. She stayed at home to raise her children Linda and Eric until they were both in junior high school. She then started a second teaching career at Elmcrest Elementary School, in the Liverpool School District. Teaching second and third grade for over twenty years there, retiring in June 1993.

Retired life was busy for her and husband Pete with numerous trailer trips out west to their favorite spot, Leadville Colorado, and a cottage back east in their hometown of Saranac Lake, spending many happy summers enjoying the Adirondack mountains, reconnecting with their hometown. She attended every high school class reunion she could and accompanied her husband, Pete, to all of his college reunions, which she enjoyed as well.

She was well known for her amazing knitting skills, making countless sweaters, blankets, hats, socks, and mittens as gifts for many family members and friends. She was also the family photographer, taking many pictures of her family and friends. Many of those photos ended up in photo albums or scrap books of her many journeys with great detail of dates and events.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Sunday January 16, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 12:00 PM on Monday January 17, 2011 at St. Bernard's Church with Rev. C.J. McAvoy officiating. Burial will take place at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
