Obituary Notice

Alma R. Symonds,born Jan. 19, 1923, passed away with her eldest son , Mertis, by her side at Saratoga Hospital on July 17, 2010 after a brief illness.

Alma was the daughter of Howard Abbott and Blanche Winch. She was born in North Elba and lived in the Vermontville area for many years before moving to the Albany area in the 1950's, most recently living at Wesley Health Community in Saratoga.

She married Elmer J. Symonds on Aug. 14, 1940.

Her greatest passion was her boys, their wives and all her grandchildren. She enjoyed country music, reading, crocheting fancy dolls dresses and baby blankets and rooting for the New York Yankees, specifically Derek Jeter.

For many years she was president of a CB club. The club activities mission was to assist needy families and organizations. She was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Mertis and Gail of Galway, Arnold and Carol of Galway, Donald and Ann of Greenfield and Roger and Bunny of Vermontville, two sisters: Winona Vander Bogart of Richmond, VA and Norma Peckham of Vermontville, a brother Carlton Abbott and his wife Sandy of Sebastian, FL, Edward Snyder, her long-time treasured companion of Half-moon, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband Elmer and two sisters: Velma Symonds and Venona Sweeney.

Friends may call from 2-4PM Tuesday, July 20, at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac lake. A funeral service will follow at 4PM Tuesday at the funeral home with Reverend Maggie McCarey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment immediately following at the Union Cemetery, Vermontville.
