Joan Ann Swartz, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
She was born in Yonkers, New York on June 23, 1930 and lived most of her life in the New York City Metropolitan area.
After high school she worked for a few years at the Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City. She married Jay Swartz, her husband of 59 years on August 13, 1950 in Yonkers, NY. After working for the Yonkers Board of Education she retired to Saranac Lake in 1987.
A devoted Catholic she believed in the power of prayer which allowed her to battle cancer for 15 years, with a positive attitude. A strong willed Irish woman, she would stand in front of a moving train for those she loved. Her generosity toward others was evident in her daily life. Be it buying gifts, cooking food or caring for her dogs. She loved to give of herself. The greatest joy of her retirement was helping raise her two granddaughters Jane and Maureen.
She is survived by her husband Jay of Saranac Lake, NY, her son Jay and his wife Joanne of Paul Smiths, NY, her daughter Elizabeth and her husband Steve of Middlebury, VT, her sister Rosemary Butler of Wappinger Falls, NY, and her grandchildren Jane, Connor, Maureen and Spencer.
Our family would like to thank the neighbors and friends who have shown support and kindness over the years.
