Thomas Stanley

August 11, 1930 — January 27, 2009

Thomas J. Stanley, age 78, of 3954 State Route 30, Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington, VT.

Born in Jamaica, Queens, New York on August 11, 1930, he was the son of Joseph and Johanna (Curtin) Stanley. He married Annette Schweitzer on October 6, 1963 in St. Elizabeth Church Far Hills, NJ.

Graduating from Farmingdale Agricultural College with a degree in Animal Husbandry, Mr. Stanley owned a dairy farm for many years in Mendham, NJ in the 1950's. A veteran of the United States Army, he served in Germany for two years from 1954 to 1956. Mr. Stanley was an avid pilot, and later co-owned and operated the Somerset Hills Airport in Basking Ridge, NJ. Always an accomplished builder and repairman, he managed the L.V. Ludlow Hardware Store in Far Hills, NJ, and acted as Assistant Superintendant of the physical plant for the Rutgers University Cook/Douglass Campus for 25 years.

Mr. Stanley had been a frequent visitor to the Adirondacks since 1976, spending summers at Fish Creek Pond where he enjoyed his love of the outdoors, boating, waterskiing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing. Following his retirement in 1992, he fulfilled his life-long dream, building a log home on Upper Saranac Lake, where he became a full-time resident in 1998. Mr. Stanley was a volunteer fireman, member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Board of Health and the Republican Committee in Bedminster, NJ where he lived from 1962 until his move to the Adirondacks. He was also a proud member of the Parish Council at St. John's Church in Lake Clear.

Always full of life, quick with a story and a handshake, Tom lived every day as if it were his last and, in his own words, “Just wanted to make people laugh.”

He is survived by his wife Annette of Saranac Lake, NY; daughter Ellen Bonheim, her husband Michael, and their daughter Kira of Morris Plains, NJ; and one son Joseph Stanley, his wife Janelle and their three children Cody, Ryan, and Kendall of Scottsdale, AZ.
