Carl Sorensen

September 5, 1947 — April 29, 2022

Carl J. Sorensen, 74, of Saranac Lake, passed away on April 29, 2022. Born in Waterford, NY on September 5, 1947, he was the son of Carl and Alice (Populorum) Sorensen.

He graduated from Southern Illinois University "The number one party school at its time!" Shortly after graduation, he and his brother "Beast" took a weekend camping trip to Saranac Lake. They quickly called it home. It could have been the beauty that lured them….or the number of bars. Carl got his first job in the area at Mark's Bar and Grill. Mark's was the introduction to many of his stories including meeting the love of his life.

Carl married Leni DeNicolo on July 1, 1971 in Saranac Lake, NY. They spent 47 wonderful years together before Leni passed in 2018.

Carl had three passions in life: His family, Syracuse University sports teams, and antiques. He rarely missed an athletic event, especially when it came to his children. Accordingly, he became an announcer for the Saranac Lake Redskins football team. His excitement in 1995 when Saranac Lake went to the title game at the Carrier Dome was immeasurable. That day also haunted his children for years to come after he sang over the radio "We're going to the Dome, We're going to the Dome" to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell for the entire town to hear.

He was an antique connoisseur. After his retirement from Adirondack Correctional Facility, he sold his treasured finds at The Red Canoe. His goal may have been to sell his antiques, but he found more enjoyment in telling stories about the good old days with his customers.

He is survived by his two children Carl (Sundy) Sorensen of Tupper lake and Ali (Brandon) McCormick of Lake Placid; four grandchildren Nathan and Rachel Sorensen of Tupper Lake and Ayden and Eli McCormick of Lake Placid; one sister Barbara Money of Baldwinsville, NY and one brother Jay (Danny) Bauer-Bontempo of Cicero, NY; and adored nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his father and mother; his wife Leni and son Kyle; brother Ned "Beast" Bauer and sister Linda Laba.

Those of you who knew Carl, know that he would rather give than receive. In lieu of funeral services, please consider making a donation to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Saranac Lake Civic Center. There will be no calling hours. Private family services will take place at the convenience of the family.. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake.
