Trudy L. Smith-Shaffer, age 59, of Saranac Lake, died Thursday, March 08, 2018 at her residence.

Born in DuBois, Pennsylvania on October 30, 1958, she was the daughter of Eugene and Janet J. (Miller) Smith. Trudy, married Richard E. Shaffer in DuBois, PA. He predeceased her on October 2, 2005.

Trudy was a 1976 graduate of DuBois Area High School, received an accounting degree from Penn State University. Before moving to Saranac Lake, she traveled widely to enjoy a very successful career in retail management working for companies such as Montgomery Ward, Gold Circle, Ames, and Elder ¬Beerman. While living in Saranac Lake, she worked for various non-profit, retail, and service businesses with her last position as an auditor for the Whiteface Lodge in Lake Placid, NY. She loved and spoiled her many pets throughout the years. Trudy enjoyed music, gardening, and genealogy. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake, NY she was active in the music program and served as an Elder. As a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Church in DuBois, PA. she was very active in their choirs and music program. As a member of the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake, she was active in the choirs and was a Certified Lay speaker. Trudy was also a member of the Saranac Lake Lodge #1508 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Trudy is survived by one brother Scott (Karen) Smith of Saranac Lake, one sister Lori J. (Rod) Borden of Columbus, OH. One uncle Charles F. Smith, Jr of Louisville, KY, one cousin Karen Smith-Beem of Louisville, KY, four nephews Michael (Sandy) Waggett of Lake Ozark, MO, Daniel S. Smith of Westfield, IA, Charles R. Smith (Morgan) of Saranac Lake, NY, and Andrew Borden (Lizzie) of Wilder, KY. Three nieces Katie Borden of Columbus, OH, Rachel (Joel) Longo of Columbus, OH, and Becky Borden of Springdale, UT. Three Grand Nephews Gabriel Borden, Simon Borden, and J.J. Longo, and one Grand Niece Cailyn Borden. Trudy was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her parents, a sister Gail Waggett, and a nephew Paul Waggett.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Memorial services will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Saranac Lake in May, date and time to be announced. Burial will take place in the at Morningside Cemetery in Dubois, PA.
