Steve Shipman, age 48, of 32 Sunset Ave., Tupper Lake, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Monday, August 17, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Lake Placid, New York on June 14, 1961, he was the son of Merritt and Marion (Ledwith) Shipman. He married Sabrina Sabre on December 22, 2007 in Tupper Lake, New York.
Steve worked at many locations in the Lake Placid area before beginning a career as a Corrections Officer. He retired for health reasons in March after 21 ½ years of service from the Adirondack Correctional Facility in Ray Brook, NY. He enjoyed golfing and fishing trips with his friends. He is a former member of the Lake Placid Volunteer Fire Department and Race Team. Steve was an athlete who loved watching sports and collecting sports cards. He was a long time member of the Lake Placid Pee Wee Association. Steve was a devoted father who enjoyed coaching and following his children in sports. Steve had an enthusiastic love of life and his laughter and energetic spirit was always contagious.
He is survived by his wife Sabrina, three sons Craig, Keith and Kyle Shipman and one daughter Cameron Shipman all of Lake Placid, two brothers Fred Shipman of Mississippi and Scott Shipman of Malone, one sister Penny Buffington and her husband Phil of Lake Placid, one granddaughter Caydence, and a "boat load" of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and one brother, Thomas Shipman.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake. Steve requested that calling hours not be held and any services will be at the convenience of the family. Remembrance gatherings will take place Thursday, August 20th at P2's Irish Pub at 4 pm and Friday, August 21st at the American Legion in Lake Placid at 4 pm for friends and family to celebrate Steve’s life.
