Dorothy K. Shene, 86, went to be with the Lord on February 19, 2016 in Elizabethtown, New York. Dorothy was born to George Keane and Evelyn (Slater) Keane Morris on September 9, 1929 in Patchogue, New York.
Dorothy was pre-deceased by her parents, step-father David Morris, husband Carl, and sister Joan Aviano.
She spent her childhood in Blue Point, attended grade school there, and graduated from New York Institute for the Education of the Blind in New York City.
Dorothy married Carl Shene in 1950, and they made their home in Bayport, N.Y., where they raised their two daughters. She received a Braille certificate from the Library of Congress and transcribed books from print to Braille for blind students being mainstreamed into public schools. Dorothy was employed as the secretary to the Bayport Methodist Church for several years.
The Shenes left Bayport in 1987 and moved to the De Chantal Apartments in Saranac Lake. Dorothy continued to reside there after her husband’s death in 1996. Health problems necessitated her move to Neighborhood House, an assisted living facility in Keene Valley, in 2011.
Dorothy was an Honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Blue Point Fire Department, held membership in the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake, served as past co-leader of the De Chantal Tenants Association, and was appointed President of the Neighborhood House Residents’ Council.
Dorothy found joy in welcoming friends and relatives to their home, loved to share stories, and always enjoyed a good laugh. She was well known for her baking, from home-made bread to pies and all that comes in between. She delighted the taste buds of many over the years with her surprise goodies. She traveled many miles with Carl to visit their children, grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Manuel) Gonzales of Las Animas, CO, and Terry (Pete) Johnson, both military USAF retired, of Schroon Lake, N.Y., three grandchildren, Joelene Gonzales of Las Animas, CO, Jason Gonzales (Jaque Stone) of London, England, and Tonya (Ryan) Bogart of Antioch, TN., and one great granddaughter, Madison Gonzales of Las Animas, CO.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held for Dorothy at the First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake on Saturday, March 12th, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Dorothy's name can be made to Keene Valley Neighborhood House, POB 46, Keene Valley, NY 12943, or The First Presbyterian Church of Saranac Lake, 57 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
