James E. Shaw, 89, formerly of Tupper Lake, died Friday, August 10, 2012 at Highland Nursing Home in Massena, NY. Born on February 13, 1923 in Upper Saranac Lake, NY. He was the son of Samuel Shaw and Marie (Gauda) Shaw.
James was a graduate of Saranac Lake High School and received a BS of Chemical Engineering from Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant JG in the Pacific.
He married Ellen Martin of Tupper Lake in May 1945 at St Alphonsus Church. They raised their family of four children in Tupper Lake.
Jim was employed at the Tupper Lake Village Office. Than as Chief Engineer at Sunmount VA Hospital. When Sunmount closed, the family moved to Lewiston, NY where he worked at the Niagara Falls Air Force Base as Maintenance Engineer. Jim then took a job as Safety Engineer for the St. Lawrence Seaway in Massena, NY, retiring from the Seaway.
During his years in Tupper Lake he aided in the establishment of the Zoning Board. He was also Head of the Federal Civil Defense for Franklin County. He served on the Save Sunmount Committee and testified before Congress in the committee's efforts to save Sunmount.
Jim also was an instructor in First Aid for the Ski Patrol Volunteers. He served on the original National Ski Patrol for Big Tupper Ski Area.
He was married to Bonnie (Tucker) Shaw in 1980 and moved to Keene, NH. Jim served as Welfare Officer to aid the poor and needy, while living in NH
Jim loved the outdoors from a young man. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, downhill skiing and camping with his family.
He is survived by one daughter Susan Cooley and husband Garry, of Uncasville, CT; three sons, James and his wife Becky of Massena, NY and Tupper Lake, Stuart and his wife Marlene of Center Valley, PA and John and his wife Linda of Tupper Lake. He is also survived by one sister Madeleine Tyrol of Brunswick, ME and sister-in-law Caroline Shaw of Grants Pass, OR; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by 3 sisters; Myrene, Jackie and Denise and 1 brother Kenneth.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 13th at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Tupper Lake between 7:00 and 9:00pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 14th at 11:00am at St Alphonsus Church with Rev Douglas Decker. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
