G. Richard Sawyer

G. Richard Sawyer, 90, of Saranac Lake, NY died Monday December 25, 2017 at his daughter’s residence.

He was born in Saranac Lake, NY on May 1, 1927, the son of Leo and Gladys (Manning) Sawyer. Richard married Patricia Miner in Plattsburgh, NY on August 29, 1949. She predeceased him on May 9, 2006.

Richard was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake, and worked for North Country Community College for 18 years until his retirement in 1989. He is a veteran of the United Stated Marines. Richard join the Marine Corps at age 17 and served from April 24, 1945 to April 15, 1949. He was a member of the American Legion Post 447, past member of the Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club and enjoyed hunting, bowling, pinochle and fishing. He also was a member of the Saranac Lake Men’s Bowling League for over 65 years.

Richard is survived by his son Tom R. and his wife Patricia Sawyer of Friendship, NY, two daughters Sandra Baker and her husband Bruce of Saranac Lake, and Wanda S. Oakes and her husband Phil of Glens Falls, NY, and nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, a daughter Debra Ezzo, his parents, and two brothers Donald and Robert Sawyer.

Calling hours will be held at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a funeral service immediately following at the funeral home at 6:00 PM. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Lake Clear in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the High Peaks Hospice or Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home. Family and friends can also sign the online guest book and share their memories at fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com
