TUPPER LAKE- Vernon J. Sabin, Jr., 70, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born on September 19, 1938 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Veron and Catherine (LaGray) Sabin. Vern attended Tupper Lake High School and was a member of the track team. After school he worked construction and joined the International Brick Layers Union in 1962. He worked on many school projects and the two high rises in Saranac Lake. In 1980, he went to work in Albany as Building Superintendent for Surface Systems, a company that did mostly restoration work on high rise buildings in the tri-state area. Vern enjoyed travel and new experiences, but in 1984 decided it was time to work close to home. He worked at Sunmount DDSO until retiring in 1992 for health reasons. Vern loved racing and raced stock cars on local tracks in the Nascar sportsman class. He also raced with the Tupper Lake Fire Dept. firematics teams and was Captain of Hose Company 3. His real love was snowmobiling. He raced against the best of factory and private sponsored and won many championships including the New York State Championship in 1967. After racing he enjoyed trail riding, starting back up the Tupper Lake Snowmobile club. Vern was chairman of the USSA Drivers community from 1969-1971. He leaves behind a son Terry and his wife Amanda of Niagara Falls, a daughter in law Sonia of South Carolina, 4 grandchildren, Eric, Jason, Chris and Danelle. Two brothers, Richard “Bucky” Clark and is wife Barbara of Tupper Lake and Donald Clark and his wife Joyce of Malone. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents and a son Jerry Sabin in 2002. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 18 from 4 to 7 pm at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home in Tupper Lake. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name church. Memorial donations may be made to the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad.
