Doris Joyce Richter died peacefully at home on Saturday October 3, at the age of 103. She was born April 19, 1912 in Mast Hope, PA, four days after the sinking of the Titanic. She was the youngest child of Jack and Mary Joyce.
Doris graduated from The School of Nursing in Englewood, NJ, where she married Dr. Donald A Richter in 1938. The family moved to Saranac Lake in 1946 where Donald practiced as an anesthesiologist for many years. Doris developed her love of painting and was a founding member of the Paint and Palette Art Association in 1964. She continued to study and exhibit extensively, winning awards in a number of juried shows. She also generously donated many paintings to charitable organizations. Her artwork is in private collections in many states. Doris taught at the Senior Center for 10 years. She also was an avid gardener.
Doris was predeceased by her husband, Donald, and a daughter, Linda Lewis, as well as grandchildren, Sean Gardiner and Rachel Domas, and great-granddaughter, Aloe Richter.
She is survived by daughter Susan Gardiner and husband Bill of Portland, OR, daughter Nancy Domas of Mast Hope, PA, son Peter of Anchorage, AK, daughter Jane Sandberg and husband Erik of Jericho, VT, and son Robert and Mary of Berne, NY, as well as 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and her cat Charlie."
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to the team of caregivers, led by Carol Fletcher, who tirelessly and lovingly supported Doris in her home. Most recently they included Terry Fountain, Mollie Knight, Dottie Lorrette, Kyle Hayes, Sue Bezio, and Marie Clark.
Calling hours are set to take place at the Fortune Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Thursday October 8, 2015 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday October 9, 2015 at St Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
