Ceylon Reed

Ceylon Reed, 85, of Tupper Lake, formerly of Hermon, NY., died peacefully on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at the home of his son & daughter in law, Mark & Lisa, surrounded by his loving family and High Peaks Hospice.

He was born in Hermon, NY on the family farm on April 20, 1924, the son of the late Floyd & Sadie (Hendrick) Reed. He married Virginia Fredrick on June 15, 1947 and together they ran the family Dairy Farm until retiring in 1977. During those years Ceylon also worked at a local cheese factory and in the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in Massena, NY. After retiring from the farm, Ceylon worked at the United Helpers Nursing home in Canton, NY. After the death of his wife in 2004, Ceylon lived in Rensselear Falls with his daughter Joanne until her untimely death in January of 2005, he then moved to Tupper Lake, to live with his son Mark. Ceylon enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and ability to laugh at most anything and make those around him laugh too.

Ceylon was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Clinton, his wife Virginia and his daughter Joanne Brossoit. He is survived by his brother Clifford of Sydney, NY, Sons Kenneth (Deborah) of Antwerp, NY, Wayne (Judy) of Altoona, Pa. and Mark (Lisa) of Tupper Lake, NY, Son in Law Robert Brossoit of Rensselear Falls, NY & and lifelong family friend who was like a son and who now lives on the family farm, Donnie (Bonnie) Matthews of Hermon, NY. He is also survived by 17 Grandchildren and 23 Great-Grandchildren, several niece, nephews and cousins.

Friends and family may call at the Stuart- Fortune- Keough Funeral Home on Monday, November 23rd from 2-4 and 7-9pm. There will be a Funeral Service at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 24th at 11am with Deacon Gerald Savage. Burial will follow at Hermon Cemetery, County Route 17, Hermon, NY.
