May Plumadore

February 20, 1921 — March 29, 2023

May Louise Furnia Plumadore, age 102, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at the Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake.

She was born February 20, 1921, in Lacona, New York, the only child of the late Ethel (Lum) and Dustin Furnia.

She grew up in Potsdam, NY, graduated from Potsdam High School and graduated from Canton ATC, now known as SUNY Canton. In the late 1930’s she met and in 1940 married the late Hayward “Red” Plumadore. During World War II, she worked at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, CT, and as a result was a lifetime member of the American Rosie the Riveter Association. Following World War II, May and Red lived in the Albany area where May ran a boarding house to help Red finance his law degree. They moved to Saranac Lake in the late 1940’s.

While in Saranac Lake, May was a charter member of the Ladies of the Elks, an original member of the Women’s Civic Chamber, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of both the American Legion and the VFW, as well as an active member of the Republican Party. In addition, she brought the training she acquired at SUNY Oneonta in the early 1950’s to the Eagles’ Nest where she was the dietician for the New York Giants during their summer camps.

During the eighties and nineties, May and Red lived in and thoroughly enjoyed Bradenton, Florida, subsequently moving back to Saranac Lake in 2000. After Red died in 2001, she continued to live there until 2008 when she moved to Falmouth, Massachusetts to be near her daughter, Karen. Last November, she moved back to Saranac Lake to be near her son, Jan, moving most recently to the Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake, New York.

May was a house flipper well before the term was created. She bought, remodeled and rented several properties in the Saranac Lake area, eventually selling them to new owners. In addition, she was an avid lover and collector of antiques and an inveterate yard saler/flea marketer, one of her favorite activities which she continued well into her 90’s.

She is survived by her three children: Jan (Barbara) Plumadore, Karen Plumadore [Arthur d.] Rauss and Brett (Pamela) Plumadore; her five grandchildren: Margot (Joshua) Plumadore Wyan, Dustin (Lindsay) Plumadore, Taylor Plumadore, Olivia Rauss and Rylan Plumadore; and three great grandchildren Anna-May Wyan, Luke Plumadore and Leo Rauss.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society in Saranac Lake, NY or People for Cats in Falmouth, MA.
