Margaret (Marjorie) K. McLaughlin, 89, of 97 Margaret St. died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at AMC-Uihlein.
Born in Albany, April 22, 1920, she was the daughter of Nicholas and Lillian Kondilis.
Her family moved to Saranac Lake when Marjorie was 5 years old. Her family was part owners of Durgan’s Restaurant.
She graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1939. She attended St. Mary’s nursing program for a short period of time. She also lived in Rochester where she worked for Eastman Kodak.
After WWII, she married her high school sweetheart, Hugh McLaughlin, March 4, 1946 at St. Bernard’s Church with Msgr. Clarence Kitts officiating. Marjorie was named volunteer of the year in 2002 for her outstanding history as a volunteer starting in the 1940s as a Gray Lady at the Sunmount Veterans Hospital in Tupper Lake. She also ran shopping errands for patients at the Trudeau Sanitorium. She worked for many years for Floyd Green at his insurance agency on Broadway. She also helped her Husband Hugh and his Grandfather, John English, when they ran the St. Regis Hotel. During the 1980s, Marjorie was Chairman of the Northwoods Chapter20of the Adirondack Mountain Club. She was a skater, hiker, swimmer, and cross country skier and an avid reader. For 30 years, she volunteered at the Saranac Lake Free Library. St. Bernard’s School library was also lucky to have her as their volunteer librarian. She had worked at the Saranac Lake High School as a librarian’s aide in the 1970s.
She was a cashier and treasurer for the Franklin County Food Co-op.
She served those in need at the Saranac Lake Ecumenical Food Pantry and from 1945 to 2001 she was an active member of the Saranac Lake, Harrietstown or Franklin County Democratic Party. She will be especially remembered for the many Meet the Candidates “TEAS” she helped organize.
She is survived by her two daughters, Karen of Saranac Lake and Genevieve of Hannawa Falls; her sister in law Barbara Kondilis of Arizona; nephews, Nick Kondilis of Arizona; Richard Jewtraw of Clay, NY and Bill McLaughlin of Saranac Lake, her niece, Shannon Stratton of S aranac Lake; her lifelong friend and traveling companion, Frances Dickie, and special friends Gay Musumeci and RoseAnn Hickey. She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh on September 20, 2004; her mother and father; her siste r and brother in law, Ethel and Richard Jewtraw; her brother Francis and brother in law and sister in law Bill and Margaret (Peggy) McLaughlin.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday, August 20, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Vigil Service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday August 21st at St. Bernard's Church, with Msgr. C.J. McAvoy officiating.
