Robert J. McGarry, 84, of Saranac Lake, died Wednesday January 23, 2012 at home.
Robert was born on December 29, 1928 in Bronx, NY, son of Anthony and Anna (Greene) McGarry. He graduated from Good Shepherd and George Washington High School. He attended John Jay College and was drafted into the U.S. Army serving as a Motor Sgt. with the 73rd Tank: Battalion in Korea from 1949 to 1952.
In October 1952, Robert went to work for the NYPD and worked there for 24 years. Robert was married to
Doris Wilson in 1955. They had two children, Kelly and Robert. He was a devoted father. Robert retired from the NYPD in 1975 as a Gold Shield Detective. After retirement, Robert moved to Lake Clear where he worked various jobs bartending. Robert also worked as a dispatcher for the Saranac Lake Police Department for 8 years. Robert was a life member of American Legion Post #447 in Saranac Lake. He was also a member of Moose Lodge #457 in Saranac Lake.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, his wife, and his daughter. Survivors include one son Robert of Kodiak, Alaska, and his loving companion, Joan Stratford of Saranac Lake. Robert will be cremated and the family will have a service at a later date.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune- Keough funeral home in Saranac Lake. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad in care of the funeral home.
