Barbara McFadyen, was born Barbara Mae Towle, to Kenneth and Ruth Towle of Lincoln, NH, Aug. 08 1922 in Lincoln, New Hampshire. She passed away quietly at her son’s home Sunday morning, Oct. 21st 2012, from the debilitating affects of Alzheimer’s.
Following high school, she went to Wilfred Academy in Boston, MA to become a beautician. Her first job was in Bennington, Vermont. Three years later, she went back to Lincoln to open her own business.
In 1946, she married Eugene (Mickey) McFadyen.
In 1947, after the closing of the United Shoe Factory in NH, they moved to Croghan, New York.
In October 1949, they moved to Tupper Lake to join the Draper Corporation.
In the 50’s they had three sons, David, Alan and Brian which led to scouting. Mrs.
McFadyen was a den mother for Pack 220-American Legion, which she claimed was the happiest time of her life. She became a leader and trainer, helping out for 20 years. She was employed by the Town of Altamont as a payroll clerk until her retirement..
She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene John McFadyen and her 1st son, David James McFadyen and her younger sister, Ruthie Gulley of Lincoln, NH. She is survived by 2 sons Alan Eugene (Bonnie) of Tupper Lake and Brian (Suzanne) of Richton Park, IL; 3 grand-daughters and 1 grand-son, Lynn, Sandra, Valerie, and James; 1 great-grand-daughter and 3 great-grand sons. She is also survived by her brother David Towle of Brisbane, CA and many nieces and nephews and numerous cousins.
Through the years Barbara had been a member of the Winter Sports Club circa 1960. She was on the Board of Directors of Women’s Home Bureau (formerly Home Demonstration Club) and club Chairwoman from 1961-62. She helped organize the Lumberjacks and Jills Square Dance Club. Was Chairman of the 1985 Cancer Fund Drive. She also volunteered during Hospice Radio Days fund raisers. Barbara was also Past Grand Regent of Catholic Daughters of America local chapter, past president of the Women’s Republican Club and worked at many voter registration and voting days.
Mrs. McFadyen was a charter member of the Racquette River Quilters and was voted Woodswoman of the year for Woodsmen’s Days in 1998.
Her family is very greatful for your thoughts and prayers and respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers to please make donations to Hospice or the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad. Services and interment were in the Riverside cemetery in Lincoln, NH. Local arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
