Katherine “Enola” McCasland, age 97, of 169 Lake Street, Saranac Lake, died Saturday, January 09, 2016 at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Plattsburgh where she had been a resident since September. Prior to that she had lived with her daughter Audrey the previous three years before going to Meadowbrook.

Born in Tupper Lake, NY, on September 28, 1918, she was the daughter of Asa and Lena (Silver) Brickey. Enola, married Harold McCasland on December 8, 1935. He predeceased her on April 28, 1992.

Enola was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake and had worked at Saranac Inn, Knollwood Club, St. Bernard’s School and the Grand Union in Saranac Lake for 37 years until her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court 787 St. Bernard, Saranac Lake Fish and Game Club, Franklin County Home Bureau and was a Cub Scout leader for many years.

Enola was a speed skater in high School and was asked to skate in the Lake Placid 1932 Olympics. It was the first year women were allowed to compete. This was an exhibition year and later became a sanctioned event in 1936. One of Enola’s children’s fondest memories during their growing up years is going to the rink with her. She could skate faster backwards than most of the younger speed skaters could forward and always made sure all her children could skate as soon as they could walk.

She is survived by two sons Harold (Marie) McCasland of Temecula, CA, and John (Judy) McCasland of Columbia, KY, two daughters Constance (Vincent) Romano of Montclair, NJ and Audrey (Glenn) Miller of Onchiota, NY, one daughter-in-law Miyoko McCasland of Haymarket, VA, one son-in-law Richard Inserra of Queensbury, NY one sister Joyce Taylor of Fine, NY, 21 Grandchildren, 37 great Grandchildren and 11 Great Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son Bob McCasland, one daughter Judy Inserra, four sisters, Bernadette McGill, Thyra Soucy, Marjorie Rice and Bertha Garluski, three brothers Carlton, John "Jack" and Elroy "Chummy" Brickey, and two grandsons Kirby McCasland, and Lucas Burgess.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday January 14, 2016 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A Catholic Daughters service will take place at 6:50 PM on Thursday evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Friday January 15, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Church with Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial will take place in St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake in the spring.
