Lawrence Maxwell

Lawrence E. Maxwell, age 78, formerly of Greenwood Apartments, Lake Placid, NY died Friday, July 08, 2011 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, with his son by his side.

Born in Newport, Vermont on September 08, 1932, he was the son of Roger and Mary (Joslyn) Maxwell.

Upon graduating from Orleans High School in Vermont, Lawrence enlisted in the United States Army. After serving two years, he returned to Vermont where he was employed at Bruneau's sawmill and then later at the Ethan Allen Furniture Mill. In 1973 he relocated with his family to Lake Placid, New York to work for Henry Uihlein at Heaven Hill Farm until his retirement. After retiring, he worked part time at Last Chance Ranch and for Norman Aamodt. Lawrence was well known for his baseball skills while in high school and later while playing for local ball teams. He also coached Little League in Irasburg, VT, boasting often of their winning record. Lawrence enjoyed following his son Larry's athletic accomplishments in baseball and golf. He was also an avid life-long Red Sox fan, having supported the team many times at Fenway. When not at Fenway, he would attend Montreal Expo games sitting in his front row seat in right field at Jerry Park where he would talk ball with the players and managers, Gil Hodges being just one of his favorites in the National League. Lawrence was also extremely proud of his family, especially his brother Maurice's very successful dairy farm in Coventry, VT where he helped out whenever he could.

He is survived by his son Lawrence P. “ Larry” Maxwell and his companion Deborah Lester of Gabriels, NY; his former wife Shelia Sisco of Derby, VT; six brothers and sisters, Maurice Maxwell and wife Lois of Newport, VT, Lodoiska Kingsbury and her husband Homer of Bradford, VT, Carl (Joe) Maxwell and his wife Veanne of Waits River, VT, Judy Bupp and her husband Ken of Bedminster, PA , Juanita French of Bradford, VT, and Barbara Jean Maxwell of Elyria, OH , three sister-in-laws Jane, Jeanette and Margaret Maxwell, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; four brothers and one sister-in-law, Alton, Dale, Darrell and Charles and his wife Dorothy Maxwell.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will take place at the convenience of the family.
