Marilynn D’Aprix Hazelden, 91, died peacefully with her family present in her beloved Adirondack Mountains on July 17, 2024.
She is survived by her children, son Doug Hazelden and daughter-in-law Sonia Hazelden, and daughter Laurie Vonasek and son in-law Stan Vonasek. Grandchildren Emilee Hazelden, Michelle Condo, Jennie Boscarino and Marie Bolton. Also great grandchildren Adam Boscarino, Ben Boscarino, Carter Condo, Caleb Condo, Brooke Bolton, and AJ Bolton. She is also survived by her brother Pete D’Aprix and many nieces and nephews.
She was born in Utica, NY in 1933. She grew up in New Hartford and always enjoyed going to the movies as a child. She remembered seeing the Wizard of Oz when it first came out. She had only ever seen black and white movies before, and didn’t know the Wizard of Oz would be any different. Her father owned a printing plant in Utica, while her mother was a stay-at-home mom.
In high school, Marilynn was very involved in clubs and sports. After graduating she went on to pursue a degree from Becker Junior College, where she took Medical Secretarial courses. This became her lifetime career. After graduating from Becker, she returned to Utica where she worked in the Medical Records Department of St. Elizabeth Hospital and Faxton Hospital. Marilynn and her two children settled in Rochester, New York. There, Marilynn became head of Medical Records at Genesee Hospital. She also volunteered as a first responder for the Perinton Volunteer Ambulance in Fairport, NY.
The family used to enjoy vacationing in the Adirondacks and when her son moved to Bloomingdale, she visited at least once a year. When Marilynn retired, she began traveling with a friend. They went on a number of cruises, visiting the Greek Isles, Turkey, England, much of Scandinavia, and Russia. To be close to her son, Marilynn moved to Will Rogers in Saranac Lake, NY, where she enjoyed reading, watching movies, and talking to other residents and family.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Celebration of Life will take place from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday July 20, 2024 at Saranac Village at Will Rogers Great Room. All friends and family are welcome.
