TUPPER LAKE-Sanford Mace ,64, of Tupper Lake, died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake. Born March 13, 1946 in Tupper Lake, he was the son of Donald and Aurora (Hache) Mace. Sanford graduated from Long Lake High School in 1964. He went on to SUNY Maritime graduating in 1968. He was employed by the Merchant Marines and went on to become the East Coast Assistant Manager for Mobil Oil. He returned to Tupper Lake and managed Timber Lodge Motel from 1974- 1977. In 1977 he became manager of Camp Otterbrook, a position he held until 1993. From 1994 until his retirement in 2008 he was employed at Sunmount DDSO as a Safety and Security officer. Sanford was Past President of the Tupper Lake Rotary club. A Volunteer and paid Ski Patrol for Big Tupper from the 1970's until it's closure in 2000. On June 25, 2010, he was placed in the Big Tupper Ski Patrol Hall of Fame of which he was especially proud. On October 7, 1989 he married Arlene Schneider. He is survived by two daughters; Gretchen Redman and her husband Carl, Shannon Cantwell and husband Jordan, two sons; Patrick Schneider and girlfriend Kayla Flagg and Sanford Mace Jr. Also surviving are two sisters; Karen Washburn, Leslie Knoll and her husband Thomas, three sister-in-laws; Ruth Klett, Mary Wilkinson, Emma Davis, five brother-in-laws; Stanley Schneider, Leon Schneider, William Schneider, Harry Schneider and Fred Schneider, seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and a close family friend Linda Provo. Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 25 from 1 - 4pm with a funeral service being held at 4 pm at the Stuart-Fortune-Keough funeral home in Tupper Lake. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus cemetery in the Spring. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Big Tupper Ski Patrol or the Tupper Lake Rescue Squad.
