Harold J. LaVair Sr., age 83, of 77 Catherine Street, Malone, NY and formerly of Lake Clear, NY died Sunday, February 14, 2009 at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone
Born in Tupper Lake, New York on January 31, 1926, he was the son of Alfred and Ida (St. Germaine) LaVair. He married Ruth Walton on February 20, 1948 in St. Regis Falls, NY. She predeceased him in 1995.
Mr. LaVair had been a resident of Saranac Lake area for most of his life and had been employed as a carpenter for various area contractors including Charlie Fischer and Jay Ellsworth. He was a Veteran of the United States Army, Company C 1292ND Engineer Combat Battalion serving during World War II from 1944 to 1946 and had been stationed at Pearl Harbor for a short time just after it had been attacked by Japan. Mr. LaVair was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3357, American Legion Post #447, Veterans Memorial Association and the Saranac Lake Moose Club. He was an avid race car fan and especially loved going to the races to watch his son and grandsons at the speedway in Plattsburgh. He enjoyed horseshoes, cards, pool and was an avid bingo player. He served in the Army during World War II having attained the rank of Technician Fifth Grade.
He is survived by one son Harold LaVair and his wife Linda of Gabriels, NY, two daughters Susan Bova and her husband Timothy of Malone, NY, and Debra LaVair and her companion Scott of Hickory, NC, two brothers Kenneth LaVair of Tupper Lake, NY, and Melvin LaVair of Nashua, NH; 6 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, five brothers Arthur, Charlie, Albert, Donald, and Robert LaVair, and his two sisters Laura Boyd, and Loretta Martin.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 7PM - 9PM. A Veterans Memorial Service will take place at 8:45 PM on Wednesday evening. A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home with Deacon Jerry Cheney officiating. Interment will take place in St. John's Cemetery in Lake Clear in the spring.
