Rita Kenedy

Rita Cuzzi Kenedy, 92, of Birch Street, Saranac Lake, died on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.

She was born on Dec. 2, 1921, in Mount Vernon, the youngest child of Emanuel and Carmela Cuzzi.

She graduated cum laude from the College of New Rochelle in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in French. She married Thomas B. Kenedy on Oct. 18, 1945, in Pelham, and they lived and raised their four children in Pelham Manor until 1969, when they moved north to Saranac Lake.

In Saranac Lake she was an active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and school community, and volunteered for many local efforts, including the hospital and the Community Lunchbox. She also taught French at St. Bernard’s School in Saranac Lake and St. Agnes School in Lake Placid. She loved tennis, gardening, photography, singing in the church choir and most of all her family and friends. She was vivacious and witty until the last minute.

She is survived by her four children: Patricia Crowley and her husband Joseph of Montgomery, Ala., Betsy Kenedy of Newburyport, Mass. and Sanibel, Fla., Paul Kenedy and his wife Maggie of Los Angeles, Calif., and Carmela Martell and her husband Tim of Scituate, Mass.; six grandchildren: Peter Crowley and his wife Michelle of Saranac Lake, Tim Crowley and his wife Lara of Geneva, Ill., John Crowley of Valemount, British Columbia, Rita Crowley of Chicago, Mark Crowley and his wife Beth of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Jeffrey Swanson of Boston; four great-grandchildren: Rosemary, Eleanor, Marianne and Violet Crowley; many nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

She was predeceased by her husband; her parents; five siblings and their spouses: Joseph and Sylvia Cuzzi, Frances and Ara Cambere, Nina and Gene Orsenigo, Nick and Dorothy Cuzzi, and Frank, Kathy and Anita Cuzzi; and two nephews.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, which is in charge of arrangements. A mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 at St. Bernard’s Church, Saranac Lake. Burial will take place in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bernard’s School or the St. Bernard’s Choir in care of the funeral home.
