Kenneth "Van" Jackman MD, emeriti professor of pediatric orthopaedics University of Rochester, age 69, passed away peacefully at his home on Upper Saranac Lake surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 18, 2010 after a 6 month battle with ALS. He is survived by his loving family, wife Carol, of 46 years, son Stephen V. Jackman MD (Dana Schultz) of Pittsburgh, PA, daughter Lauriann J. Garland (Jim) of Seattle, WA, grandchildren Connor and Dylan Garland, and Reilly and Piper Jackman, sister Diana Raney of Pasadena, CA, brother-in-law Dirck Benson Jr. (Cary) of Princeton, NJ, and golden retriever, Ceilidh. He received a BA at Pomona College in '63, his MD at U of R in '67, and served at the US Naval Hospital Guam, '69-'71.
In Saranac Lake he was a member of SARANAK (Search and Rescue Assoc. of the Northern Adirondacks), AARA (Adirondack Amateur Radio Assoc.) and a naturalist volunteer at The Wild Center (Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks). A former eagle scout, he volunteered with the Otetiana Council, BSA. An avid piper, he had been a member of the Rochester Scottish Pipeband, Feadan Or and Ceilidh Connection. A bagpipe concert in celebration of his life will take place September 19 at 4 PM at Parkminster Presbyterian Church, 2710 Chili Ave. Rochester.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Friends wishing to remember Dr. Kenneth V. Jackman may make memorial contributions to The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, High Peaks Hospice or the Piper's Gathering Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home. A Memorial Bagpipe Concert will take place on Sunday September 19 at 4 PM at the Parkminster Presbyterian Church, 2710 Chili Ave, Rochester, and also on Saturday September 18, there will be a Pre Memorial Gathering from 4 - 9 PM at the Rochester Airport Holiday Inn.
