Joan R. Hough, age 79, formerly of Lake Clear and more recently of Saranac Village at Will Rogers died Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on February 05, 1932, she was the daughter of Ives and Ruth (Lyon) Turner. She married Harold G. Hough on September 9, 1950 in St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. He predeceased her on September 21, 2004.
Joan was a lifelong resident of the area, returned to college after raising her family, and worked at for St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center in Saranac Lake as a Credentialed Alcohol Counselor until her retirement in 1997. Joan was a lifetime member of the American Contract Bridge League and played duplicate bridge in the Saranac Lake, Plattsburgh, and Malone clubs since the early sixties and in many sectional, regional, and national tournaments. She was a Silver Life Master and was very close to becoming a Gold Life Master. Joan was an animal lover, and when she was not playing bridge, she loved reading and gardening.
She is survived by five children who loved her dearly: Roxanne McCarty and her husband Mark of Bloomingdale; Bertice K. Hough of Stuart, FL; Sylvia L. Hough and her husband Harrison Ewing of Union Falls, NY; Holly Hough Baldwin and her husband Kim of Plattsburgh, NY; and Shelly R. Hough of Saranac Lake; four grandchildren: Marguerite McCarty, Ives McCarty, Liza Hough and Travis Hough; and two great grandchildren Aislynne McCarty and Ariana Chavers. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and one daughter: Heidi Joanne Hough who died in infancy.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Joan's family will receive friends on Friday, February 18, 2011 from 7PM - 9PM. at the Saranac Village at Will Rogers great room. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Paul's Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
