Thomas G. Herr, 75, of Tupper Lake, formerly of Phillipsburgh, Pa, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather died March 3, 2012 at 3 p.m. at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake due to ongoing medical conditions.
Tom was born on April 1, 1936 in Harrisburg, Pa. He was the son of the late Lee Alfred Herr and Winifred (Blakney) Herr.
At the age of 21, Tom enlisted in the United States Air Force, following in his father’s footsteps. He was stationed at Westover AFB, Massachusetts. He was a Utilities Helper in the 814th INSTLRON. He was honorably discharged as an Airman on February 2, 1962.
He never has children of his own, but he raised several foster children with his first wife where they resided in Maple Heights, Ohio. He also helped his close friends raise their children.
After the death of his first wife, he moved to Tupper Lake with close friends and family. He then married Lynda McGiboney, who had been a lifelong friend in April of 2000.
His last job he held was as a security guard in Madison, Ohio, where he retired from. He also worked at a steel mill, at a cement plant and as an assembly line worker.
Tom is survived by his wife, Lynda McGiboney-Herr, his sisters Rosemary Quick, Beatrice and Anthony Pavlick, and Evelyn (Herr) Brown, 3 daughters Cheryl McGiboney, Sandra and Kevin Willette, and Kathy Kennedy, 2 grandchildren Craig Lalonde and Amanda Cremains. He also had great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by both parents and three brothers, Lee Herr Jr, Robert Herr, William Herr and one sister, Mildred Jones.
He enjoyed family, friends, camping, baseball, football, basketball, country music, playing the guitar, western movies, animals, making people laugh and being around children.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 12 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Church. Following this will be a reception at the VFW . Burial will be in May, along with Military honors.
The family asks if food donations are made to hold off until the reception. These can be dropped off to the VFW the night before the reception or the day of the reception. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in care of the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home.
