John Patrick Harvey, age 68, of Plattsburgh and formerly of Saranac Lake passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at his home with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.
John was born in New York City on September 30, 1944. He was the son of Patrick and Agnes(Clarke) Harvey.
John had been employed for twenty plus years at St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center until his recent retirement due to illness. This was John’s true passion in life to share his experience and to help others with their struggles with addiction as he had been helped. John had also been employed at Yonkers General Hospital as a counselor and prior to that he had been employed in the construction industry for various trade organizations. John also served in the US Army Reserve for 6 years.
John was an avid Yankees and Giants fan. His other passions in life were music and golf. He played the fiddle much to his family’s enjoyment and loved listening to all types of music especially in the car on his many trips to Maine, Virginia and South Carolina to visit family and to play golf.
John is survived by his two sons, John Patrick Harvey, Jr. of Kissimmee, Fla., Thomas James Harvey of Bangor, Maine and his grandson, Nikolas Harvey also of Bangor, Maine, his companion Karen Baker of Plattsburgh and her three children Nicole, Susan and Jeffrey Duve and her five grandchildren, one brother Dr. Kevin Harvey(Dr. Lorena Harvey) of Midlothian, Va., two sisters Marie Keaveney(Brian) of Midlothian, Va., Georgine O’Donnell(John) of Westchester, NY.
He is also survived by his nieces Jennifer Giles(Dr. Patrick Giles), Christine Harkin(Peter), Margaux Roberts(Jason) and Elizabeth O’Donnell and Alejandra Harvey.
John was predeceased by his parents, his nephew John Patrick O’Donnell and the mother of his sons, Sandra Daly.
The family would also like to thank his special friends that helped in many different ways and his golfing buddies.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00am on Tuesday May 28 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake with his very dear friend Rev. Dan Callahan officiating. A reception will immediately follow at St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation Center in Saranac Lake. A memorial service and internment will take place at a later date in Westchester, NY.
