Word has been received of the death of Gertrude Edith Harvey, age 98, of 3 Sumner Lane, Saranac Lake, NY who died on Tuesday, June 02, 2009 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
Born in Constable, New York on October 22, 1910, she was the daughter of Wesley and Hannah (Starr) Gokey.
She attended Union Free School. Gertrude was one of 10 children. She married Leon Harvey Sr. on October 1, 1932 in St. Bernard's Church by Msgr. Kitts.
Gertrude was employed at the Schriners Nursing Home during the T.B. era, New York Telephone Co until her retirement in 1992. She also worked for Franklin and Clinton Counties taking care of foster children and unwed mothers and adults in her home. Gertrude was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church and was very active in Altar and Rosary Society and Catholic Daughter of America and Court St. Bernard 787. She was the recipient of the Good Neighbor Award in 1992. Came to Saranac Lake at age 16 and worked in Cure cottages.
She is survived by her two children Leon Harvey, Jr. and Judy Bibeau and her husband Lionel of Saranac Lake, NY, six grandchildren Catherine O'Kane and her husband Kevin of Springfield, PA, Barbara Bibeau of Napanoch, NY, Dennis McCarthy of New York City, NY, Kelma Dannissi and her husband Gregg of Merrill, NY, and Paul Allen Harvey and his wife Tina of San Antonio, TX; Eight great grandchildren Corinne, Kelsey and Courtney of Springfield, PA; Ryan and Robert Satori of Dover Plains, NY, Tony and Kalee of Merriel, New York and Paul Allen Harvey of South Dakota, many nieces and nephews, and one sister Mrs. Eleanor Thomas of Bangor. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, her husband Leon, one daughter Phyllis, one brother Urchill Gokey, two sisters Mae Boadway, and Marie Kurnit one granddaughter Bridget McCarthy Satori,
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Friday June 5, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Catholic Daughters Service will take place at 7:45 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 6, at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Paul Kelly officiating. Burial will take place at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
