TUPPER LAKE
Herbert F. Halbig residing at Partridge Knoll Retirement Community, Canton, New York and a former resident of Tupper Lake, New York died Sunday, June 10, 2012 of a short term illness at the age of 92. Born June 19, 1919 in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of Joseph and Agnus (Seibert) Halbig. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1939 and served in the U. S. Army from 1939 to 1943 with an honorable discharge. Mr. Halbig had the honor and distinction of touring with the U.S. Army Band and is also an alumnus of the Malta Band of Lancaster, PA. Departing from his musical pursuits, Mr. Halbig continued his studies at the Granham School of Electronics, Washington, D. C. and graduated in 1958. He attended the RCA Service School at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida and joined NASA where he was instrumental in establishing the Atlantic Missile Test Range in San Salvador, West Indies. As a graduate of the Engineering Program at the Federal Aviation Agency in Washington, D.C., Herb was also employed by the Washington D. C . Air Traffic Control Center. Mr. Halbig was on the electronics staff at the State University of Arts and Sciences at Potsdam as well as GE Television in Syracuse. At WCNY TV in Watertown, New York, Herb was employed as an Operations Engineer. Mr. Halbig built and was the owner of the Top Notch Motel where he also operated a television repair business. Herb was also licensed as a ham radio operator and held advanced licensing with the FAA and FCC.
Mr. Halbig was married to the late Marie (Frank) Halbig and is survived by his niece, Marlene Frank-Schinto and her husband, Dr. John Schinto, Jr. , both residing in Palm City, Florida.
There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held on Friday, June 15th at 11:00 at St. Alphonsus Cemetery with full military honors. A memorial mass is scheduled for Wednesday June 13th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's church in Canton.
