Robert A. Haghuis-Reiss, age 60, of 86 Meenahga Mountain Road, Onchiota, NY, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at his home.

Born in Almelo, Netherlands on February 12, 1949, he was the son of Bernard and Margo (Lankamp) Haghuis.

Robert moved to the United States from The Netherlands in 1971 and became a U.S. Citizen in 1981. He originally located in New York City where he worked at an Art Gallery before deciding to travel in the United States. He stayed briefly in Miami, Atlanta and New Orleans before settling in Houston, Texas. There he worked in the Interior Design field as a Showroom Manager and Interior Designer. Jake and Robert committed to each other on March 15, 1977. In 1992 he joined Jake in their joint venture, J & R Interior Plantscaping, Inc. where he worked until becoming disabled after contracting a parasitic disease. In September 2000, he moved with Jake from Houston to Onchiota where he was well known for the hand-poured candles he assisted in promoting under the name Aromas Galore. He attended craft fairs with Jake all over the state and in New Jersey and Pennsylvania

He is survived by his adoptive father and companion of 32 years, Jacob L. Reiss, II of Onchiota, one sister Diana Jongman and her husband Hans of Hengelo, Netherlands and two brothers Marcel Haghuis and his wife Corrie and John Haghuis both of Hengelo, Netherlands.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Wednesday September 9th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 PM at the funeral home with Rev. Paul Kelly officiating.
