Funeral services have been set for Albert Arthur Gonyea, age 91, of Saranac Lake New York, who died Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Adirondack Medical Center.
Born in Moira, New York on April 14, 1923, he was the son of Wilbur and Theresa (Sussey) Gonyea. Albert married Mary Etta Bernard February 16, 1942 at Notre Dame Church in Malone. She predeceased him on October 9, 2004.
Mr. Gonyea had recently resided at the Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake. Prior to that he was a resident of Saranac Lake and had been employed for Wood Brothers in Saranac Lake for 30 years and worked for Camp Regis in Lake Clear for 14 years. He is a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1942 to 1953, during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Gonyea had been a life member of the Saranac Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars, having been a member since 1949. He was involved in the Voice of Democracy Program for 25 years. He was also a Local, County and District Commander. He had received numerous awards through the years for his dedicated service and involvement with community projects. He was a life member of the VFW National Home. He also was a member of the Saranac Lake Elks Club BPOE 1508 for 34 years and the American Legion Saranac Lake Post for 40 years,
He is survived by his one son Mario Anthony Gonyea of Cottonwood, AZ, one daughter Cora Jeanne and her husband Jay Walter of Sackets Harbor, one sister Helen Rock of Lake Placid, three grandchildren Michael Walter of Hopkinton, NY, Albert Walter of Hammond and Barbara Pishock of Fredricksburg, VA, one great grandson Ty Walter of Ohio and two great grandsons Tommie Pishock of Fredricksburg, VA, and Andrew Walter of Colton. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers and sister-in-laws Wilbur Gonyea and his wife Marjorie of Utica and Leroy Gonyea and his wife Rita of Malone.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake on Saturday July 25, 2015 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM .A Memorial Service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 3:00 PM. Burial with military honors will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Bloomingdale.
