Obituary Notice
Donald Joseph Forth of Saranac Lake passed away January 2, 2011 at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
He was born in Syracuse, NY on January 3, 1927and was the son of Jannie M. Siebert Forth and Joseph W. Forth.
He attended school in Syracuse graduating from Central High School in 1947 after serving in the U.S. Navy PT Boat Division for two years. He graduated from Paul Smiths College in 1950 and the University of Denver in 1951. He married Olive Dimitroff, June 10, 1950 at the Keese Mills Presbyterian Church in Paul Smiths. After working as a chef and a college food service director at many locations throughout the country, he moved his family to Saranac Lake in 1972 to work at Paul Smiths College as an assistant professor in the hotel division. He taught there for twelve years and was faculty advisor to many student associations. While there, he enjoyed organizing and participating in student field trips and producing themed banquets. He retired in 1985 due to ill health while teaching at the University of Maryland. Donald was well known as a model train collector, gardener, furniture restorer and “Nice Guy”.
He is survived by his wife, Olive, 1 brother, Kenneth Forth, 3 sons, Donald Jay Forth, Jeffrey Forth, Craig Forth, 2 daughters Susan Forth, Donna Leonard, her husband, Bruce and three grandchildren.
At Donald’s request, no calling hours will be held and a private burial will take place at a later date. Those wishing to remember Donald may make donations to the Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad, North Country Life Flight or Friends of Mt. Pisgah in care of the Fortune Keough Funeral Home.
