Janice Fortado, age 85, died Tuesday, November 02, 2010 at her daughter’s home on Harrietstown Road, Saranac Lake. She resided at Uihlein Mercy Center since January,2005 until she returned to her daughter's home under the support and love of Hospice care.
Janice was born in Jacksonville, Illinois on April 14, 1925, the daughter of Justin and Viola (Brockhouse) Leib.
She was one of seven children who grew up in difficult conditions in rural Illinois duirng the Great Depression. She graduated from Chapin High school in 1943 and began working
in a factory making parachutes for the United States Military during World War II. This was the first of a long, continuous history of working as a seamstress, sewing men's suits for until her employer closed its doors in the 1960's.. She was then employed by the State of Illinois in various positions including laundry service and meal preparation. Her marriage to Henry Fortado was short-lived and she raised her only child, Dianne, alone.
Janice loved to travel and did so extensivley with her identical twin sister Jean and brother-in-law Pete, including trips to England, Philippines, Okinawa, and Mexico. She was a master at crotchet and an excellent seamstress, proudly sewing her daughter's wedding gown. Janice retired and moved to Dechantel Apartments in Saranac Lake in 1986 to be with her family. While here she pursued oil painting, reading, and crotchet. She especially enjoyed walking around Saranac Lake and many knew her by her red hat and daily walk. She was salt of the earth.
She is survived by her only child Dianne Fortado and son-in-law Phil Newton of Saranac Lake, beloved grandchildren _Abi Newton of Portland, Oregon, Elizabeth Newton of Villeneuve le Roi, France, Abraham and Mistre Newton of Saranac Lake and a niece Della Mae Spainhower of Illinois. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and her identical twin sister Jean Peters who died in 2005.
Calling hours will be at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday, November 8, 2010 from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM. A memorial service at 11:00am on Tuesday November 9, 2010 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Saranac Lake, followed by a reception in the parish hall.
