Walter Howard Fiedler, devoted husband, father, grandfather & friend, age 96, of 77 Mt. Pisgah Lane, Saranac Lake, died Thursday, February 04, 2016 at home with his family by his side.
Born in Yonkers, New York on June 13, 1919, he was the son of Walter A. and Anna Marie (Diemel) Fiedler. Walter married Anne Regan on August 18, 1956 at the Holy Cross Church, Hopkinton, NY.
Walter is a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II as an officer in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. Following the war Walter attended Clarkson University School of Engineering on the G.I. Bill. He graduated with honors and was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Upon graduation he joined Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, as a Mechanical Engineer. Walter resided in Glastonbury, CT with his wife Anne, raising their three daughters. In 1988, following retirement, Walter and Anne moved to Saranac Lake. Walt loved fixing cars, skiing, tennis, golf and motorcycles. He especially loved airplanes and airplane engines, and was an active member of the Saranac Lake Free Library and Adirondack Mountain Club.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Anne Regan Fiedler of Saranac Lake, three daughters Mary E. Fiedler of Collinsville, CT, Margaux A. Plourde of Bloomfield, CT, Christine M. (Clayton M.) Felker of San Antonio, TX, and six grandchildren; Jason, Miranda, Kelsey, Delaney, Linnea and Aidan. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and two sisters Eleanor M. Podgurski and Janet P. Flippin.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday February 11, 2016 at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial with military honors will be held in the spring at St. Mary’s cemetery, Potsdam, NY.
