Robert J. Farmer, age 73, of 51 McClelland Street, Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, NY.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on June 10, 1935, he was the son of Loyal and Violet (Tormey) Farmer. He married Sylvia Smith on May 9, 1959 in Muncy, PA.
Mr. Farmer was a life long resident of Saranac Lake and had been employed as a Police Dispatcher for the Saranac Lake Village Police Department for over 20 years until his retirement in 1993. He served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1960. Mr. Farmer cared deeply for the well being of the youth in our community and had coached youth baseball and youth hockey for many years. Together with his wife Sylvia, he had also served as a foster parent for several years for children who needed a home. Since childhood Mr. Farmer was an avid fisherman and while growing up here he loved to get up early in the morning and go fishing before school. Later in life he spent a great deal of time fishing on lower Saranac Lake with family and friends. He also loved to build model airplanes.
He is survived by his wife Sylvia; four sons Mark Farmer and his wife Sharon of Lake Clear, NY, Robert Farmer and his wife Colleen of Saranac Lake, NY, Michael Farmer and his wife Joanne of Saranac Lake, NY, and Troy Farmer and his wife Luann of Saranac Lake, NY; one brother Steven Farmer and his wife Patricia of Vermontville, NY; two sisters Elizabeth Farmer of Saranac Lake, NY, and Sharon Branch and her husband Richard of Saranac Lake, NY; 8 Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and one sister Linda Lamb.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Saturday, February 28, 2009 from 2PM - 4PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 4:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
