Jean Ann Dawson Ewan, age 92, of Tupper Lake, died Tuesday, February 21, 2024 at Mercy Living Center in Tupper Lake.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on September 24, 1931, she was the daughter of Beasley and Gladys (Williams) Dawson. Her father died when she was a child; her mother remarried Rupert Daniels. Jean and her husband, Harold Ewan, met as teens when they were neighbors; their families lived next to each other in an apartment building on Dean St. in Brooklyn. They were married on October 6, 1950 in Brooklyn, NY. Harold predeceased her on June 4, 1979.
Jean was an officer for the New York State Department of Corrections for many years at the Adirondack Correctional Facility in Ray Brook; she also worked at other facilities, retiring from her last assignment at Camp Gabriels. She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ewan Howitt (Robert Czakel), eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, her parents, and three children, Cathy, Dirk, and Julie Ewan.
She leaves many long-time friends and former colleagues, including Betty and Mel Thwaits, Joan Snyder, Ed and Rosemarie Morrow, and DeWreathe Francis.
Funeral arrangements are in care of Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will take place in the Spring at the family lot in St. John's in the Wilderness Cemetery in Lake Clear.
