Marie Derby

Marie A Derby, age 82, of 78 Will Rogers Drive, Saranac Lake, died Saturday, April 02, 2016.

Born in Saranac Lake, New York on March 12, 1934, she was the daughter of Victor and Mary (McDermott) Lashway. Marie, married John Derby May 27, 1961 in St. Bernard's Church. He predeceased her on August 21, 1986.

Marie was a lifelong resident of Saranac Lake. She received her bachelors in nursing from Plattsburgh State. She had been employed at the Saranac Lake General Hospital as a registered nurse from 1959 to1968, North Country Community College from 1968 to1983 and Adirondack Medical Center from 1983 until her retirement in 1996. She worked as a per diem registered nurse at High Peaks Hospice from 1998 to 2016. Marie is a past member of the Saranac Lake Ladies of Elk and served on the Saranac Lake Central School Board for 5 years. She especially enjoyed knitting and crocheting, crosswords and traveling.

She is survived by one daughter Mary K. (Larry) Benham of Saranac Lake one son John (Nina) Derby, II of Lake Clear, two grandchildren Megan Benham of Rochester and David Benham of NYC. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and one sister Vera Finegan.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday April 6, 2016 from 5:00 PM to 7:45 PM. A funeral service will immediately follow at 7:45 PM at the funeral home with Rev. John Yonkovig officiating. Burial will take place in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
