Michalina Del Monte, Age 91, a resident of Mercy Living Center and formerly of Flemington, NJ, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 16, 2023, at Adirondack Medical Center.
Michalina, most well known as Lena, was born in Raritan, NJ on August 14, 1931, the daughter of Dominick and Rose (Barone) Papera. Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest Del Monte; and siblings Ann Leibold, Frank Papera, and Donny Papera.
Lena was employed by DYFS as a foster parent helping children in need for many years, and was mostly a stay-at-home mom caring for her family. As an avid cook, Lena’s favorite thing to do was get family and friends together for big Italian meals and a good time. Pizza and homemade chicken soup was her speciality. Lena had a sweet tooth, especially for chocolate, which she passed on to her granddaughter Alivia. She also loved animals and was known to rescue many stray cats.
Lena is survived by her two daughters, Corrine Sapone (Frank) and Lorraine Aquino (Paul); her sister, Mary Demyan; sister-in-laws, Carol Papera and Charlotte Papera; and her three grandchildren, Michael Sapone (Molly), Kylie Sapone (Jordan), and Alivia Sapone. Lena is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Lena requested to be cremated and placed in her favorite bird house which will be nestled in the woods among the birds and animals she loved; there will be no calling hours. Family and friends may choose to remember Michalina Del Monte with a memorial contribution to the Tri Lakes Humane Society in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY 12983.
