Janet Debbie

June 2, 1935 — March 19, 2016

Janet M. Debbie, age 80, of 148 Duprey Street, Saranac Lake, died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at her home surrounded by family.

Born in Saranac Lake, New York on June 02, 1935, she was the daughter of Ira and Beatrice (Hannon) Munn. Janet married Dr. John “Jack” Debbie on September 12, 1959 in St. Bernard's Church.

After their marriage Jack and Janet lived and worked in Ithaca, NY; Guelph, Ontario, Canada; Nairobi, Kenya and then settled in Albany, NY. Summers were always spent at their camp with extended family in Saranac Lake. The coming of the Olympics to Lake Placid in 1980 gave Jack and Janet the opportunity to return to Saranac Lake to raise their children in the town they both considered home. Janet was above all things a wife, mother and grandmother but she also worked at St. Bernard’s School for many years as a playground monitor. One of her great joys after retirement was having previous St Bernard's students ask her if she remembered them when she saw them around town - she always said she did. She was a past member of the Saranac Lake Ladies of the Elks.

She is survived by her husband Dr. John “Jack” Debbie of Saranac Lake, two daughters Dr. Patricia Monroe and her husband Raymond of Saranac Lake, and Pamela Hill and her husband Ralph “Bunker” of Troy, NY and one son Paul Debbie and his wife Dorothy of Ithaca, NY, six grandchildren Thomas, Michael and Forrest Monroe, John and Samuel Debbie, and Patrick Hill and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, her brother and sister-in-law David and Helen Munn of Saranac Lake, her sister and brother-in-law Margaret “Peggy” and Marty Devit of Saranac Lake and Ormond Beach, as well as a half-brother and his wife, Joseph and Eleanor Munn of Saranac Lake.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Sunday March 27, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday March 28, at St. Bernard's Church, with Thomas Higman officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Saranac Lake.

Friends wishing to remember Janet Debbie may make memorial contributions to St. Bernard's School in care of the funeral home. Family and friends can also share their memories and sign the online guestbook at fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
