Howard Coombs, 84, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2017 at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
He was born in Barachois, Gaspe, Quebec on September 26, 1932 to Edith (Thompson) and Herman Coombs.
He spent his childhood growing up with his family on the Gaspe Peninsula. He later moved to Montreal with his parents. In 1950 he began working in the logging industry in Northern Ontario. He came to Saranac Lake in 1952 to work with his Uncle Jim at Coombs Auto Body Shop. He purchased the business from his uncle and retired and closed the business in 1992. He enjoyed traveling, golfing, hockey, softball, fishing, staying and working at his camp, visiting family and friends, and spending the winter months in Florida.
He is survived by his wife Jackie (Dumont) of 62 years and their children Terry Coombs, Lynn Bacan and her husband Scott and their children Carly and Andrew: and Cathy Fountain and her husband Bert and their children Emily and Abbey; one sister Vera Rusak and her husband William, and a brother-in-law Francis Dumont. He was predeceased by his mother and father and three infant brothers:Terry, Willie and Lindy.
He was a member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club, Saranac Lake Men's Bowling League, Saranac Lake Elks Lodge, and the Saranac Lake Pee-Wee Hockey Association where he enjoyed his time coaching the Elks Pee-Wee Hockey team in his earlier years.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours . There will be a mass of Christian Burial on Friday June 9th at 11:00 AM at St. John's Catholic Church in Lake Clear.
