Virginia Cayen, age 84, of 60 Church Street, Saranac Lake, NY died Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the AMC-Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had been a resident since December 2, 2008.
Born in Potsdam, New York on May 21, 1924, she was the daughter of Edward and Helen (Clukey) Gonyeau. She married Edward Cayen on June 21, 1941 in Potsdam, New York. He predeceased her in 1974.
Mrs. Cayen had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1999 coming from Potsdam, New York. She had been employed by the New York Telephone Company from 1960 to 1979. She later owned and operated Jean’s Dress Shop in Potsdam, New York for 19 1/2 years. After moving to Saranac Lake she had worked for St. Bernard's Church Rectory as the cook for 8 years until her retirement. Mrs. Cayen was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Bernard. She had also volunteered at the Adirondack Medical Center for five years and the Saranac Lake Adult Center for a couple of years.
She is survived by one daughter Sandra Walker and her husband Arthur of Saranac Lake, NY, one brother Vernon Gonyeau of Govenuer, NY, two grandchildren Jason Walker of Old Bridge, NJ and Rachel Walker of Saranac Lake, NY. She was preceded in death by her father, mother one brother Edward Gonyeau and one sister Betty Hatch.
Memorial calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 from 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow at 12:00 P.M. at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer and Rev. Timothy Soucy officiating. Burial will take place in Colton, NY in the spring.
