Milton Cass

Milton H. Cass, age 94, of Vermontville, NY died Friday, May 25, 2012 at home following a short illness.

Born in Vermontville, New York on September 29, 1917, he was the son of Rufus and Rhoda (Rogers) Cass. He married Kathleen J. Swinyer on September 14, 1940. She predeceased him on August 9, 2005.

Mr. Cass was a life-long resident of Vermontville. He began his working life as a self-employed trucker and worked a farm with his father. During WWII he worked construction in the area. In 1950 he went to work as a mechanic for Gene Christian at the Buick Garage in Saranac Lake. The garage was later operated by Dick Gladd and he continued there until 1968. He was later a school bus driver and a mechanic at the bus garage. He was Town of Franklin Highway Supervisor from 1977-1981. He operated a Mr. Softee ice cream business out of his home from 1969 until 1974 and travelled to area campsites. He enjoyed travelling with his wife Kathleen and surf fishing at Cape Hatteras.

He is survived by a son: Gordon Cass and his wife Jo-Ann, a daughter: Geneva Romeo both of Vermontville, NY, five grandchildren: Marc Cass and his wife Missy, Megan Nelson and her husband Robert , Patrick Romeo and his wife Rebi, Bruce Romeo and his wife Maureen, and Derrick Romeo, Six great grandchildren Maryssa Romeo, Cassidy Romeo, Brant Cass, Shantel Heller, Jordyn Nelson and Noelle Cass. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ruth Liepzenmayer. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A graveside service will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday June 2, 2012, at Union Cemetery in Vermontville with Rev. David Drake officiating.
