Madge Carpenter, age 59, of 60 Church Street, Saranac Lake, died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at ANC-Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid where she had been a resident since August 11, 2009.
Born in Saranac Lake, New York on January 14, 1951, she was the daughter of Francis "Red" and Eleanor (Rice) Stearns. She married Duane Carpenter on July 4, 1970 in Saranac Lake, New York.
Madge had worked as an LPN for many years for various community health organizations including the Franklin County Nursing, Lakeside House and private duty nursing. She also had worked at the Adirondack Medical Center from 1983 to 1998 as and LPN Ekg Tech/ Monitor Tech. Madge had also been employed by Bill's Taxi Service for several years and had worked for a podiatrist for 10 years both in Saranac Lake, NY. She was a dedicated volunteer for various organizations including the Board of Essex County Head Start program, Board of Directors for the America Red Cross and was Blood Service Chairperson for 9 years. She also was a member of the Bereaved Parents Group of Saranac Lake. One of Madge’s greatest pleasures in life was her family and spending time with her mom, dad, children and nieces and nephews. Madge will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her husband Duane Carpenter of Saranac Lake, NY, one son Russell Carpenter of Saranac Lake, NY; her mother Eleanor Stearns of Saranac Lake, NY, two sisters Karen Stearns and Jill Woodruff both of Saranac Lake; two brothers W. Alan Stearns and his wife Jamie G. of Penfield, NY, and Scott Stearns and his wife Susan of Ontario, NY and two granddaughters McKenzie Carpenter of Maryland, MD, and Kelsey Gilmet of Saranac Lake, NY. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Francis "Red" Stearns, her daughter Molly Carpenter, and her son Steven Carpenter.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced. Burial will take place in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Saranac Lake.
