Evelyn M. Camelo, age 84, of 53 Pontiac Street, Saranac Lake, died Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Elderwood of Uihlein in Lake Placid.
Born in Tupper Lake, New York on March 21, 1933, she was the daughter of John and Dorothy (Walsh) Peer. She married Francis Camelo on September 14, 1957 in St. Bernard's Church.
Evelyn attended and graduated from Saranac Lake High School. She received her Registered Nursing degree at Champlain Valley School of Nursing. She had been employed as an RN at Sunmount DDSO for many years until her retirement in 1991. Prior to that she had worked at the Ray Brook State Hospital and Will Rogers Hospital. Evelyn was a member of the Catholic daughters of America, Court St. Bernard, Saranac Lake Elks Club BPOE 1508 and the St. Bernard’s Church prayer group. She was an active member of St. Bernard’s Church where she taught CCD classes for 12 years and served as a Eucharistic minister.
She is survived by her husband Frank, three sons Gerard Patrick (Sheryl Gravelle) Camelo of Franklin, NC, Peter Francis (Elizabeth) Camelo of Simpsonville, SC and James Leonard (Lori) Camelo of Sarasota, FL, seven grandchildren, Nong Earth, Avalon, Luke, Eleanor, Jack, Marcy, and Austin, one brother Walter Peer of Burlington, MA and many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by one brother Mike Peer and one sister Winifred Spadola.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 Am on Monday May 22, 2017 at St. Bernard's Church, with Rev. Patrick Ratigan officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
