Sandy passed, peacefully, into eternal rest on March 25, 2018 after a long battle with several assailants.
She was born in Glenmont, NY, on January 2, 1948, to Henry and Hazel (Barbour) Herchenroder. She Graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in 1966. She had worked for Farm Family Insurance Co. and the NY State Assembly. After moving to Saranac Lake, she worked as Executive Secretary for the Hotel Saranac and utilized her candor and "attitude", for many years, in her employ with the Adirondack Daily Enterprise. She related many stories of this memorable time and the people she treasured.
She met her husband, Bob, on a blind date in 1964 and demonstrated her loyalty with two years of daily letters addressed "U.S. Army". In 1966, Sandy created Christmas for twenty Vietnam soldiers with packages of snacks, intuitive gifts and even a fully decorated tree. Picture the soldiers, with weapons at the ready, playing with toys like little children. Sandy and Bob were wed on February 4, 1967.
Everyone knows how she exercised her right to free speech, with very few words you knew exactly what she was thinking, yet this sometimes masked her other precious qualities. Sandy was caring, devoted and generous. Her love of animals is legendary and she epitomized the mama bear in the affection and discipline of her children.
Sandy was blessed with many admiring friends and close family members. They will always remember her for her shared love, endearing honesty and spontaneous wit. In her final days, she marched with the strength and courage of a gladiator, setting the tone for all who were grieving. She carried a heart filled with love and special feelings for all.
Our cherished Sandy is survived by her husband Bob, sons Olin (Shana), Oliver and Bruce, grandchildren Shelby, Nolan, Rachel, Brice and Kyla and two loving sisters, Pamela House of Haines City, FL and Lynn Hummel of Glenmont, NY.
Sandy was predeceased by her mother and father and a sister Judy.
Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours and Sandy has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to a Humane Society or Rhett Syndrome Research Trust, 67 Under Cliff Road, Trumbull, CT 06611 Family and friends can also share their memories and sign the online guest book at fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
