William Butterfield

February 10, 1922 — December 3, 2013

William M. Butterfield died on December 3, 2012 in at the Franklin County Nursing Home in Malone, NY at the age of 90.

Mr. Butterfield was born in New York City on February 10, 1922; the only child of B. V. and Betty Butterfield. Bill married Julianne Richards on May 16, 1944. Shortly thereafter, Bill was honorably discharged from the 303rd Infantry Regiment having served in Europe and Asiatic Pacific Theaters, earning a Bronze Star.

No memorial service is scheduled.

Bill and Judy moved to Saranac Lake with their three children in 1955, and the couple lived in the Adirondacks for almost sixty years.

During that time, Bill worked for the Saranac Lake Central Schools as an English teacher and counselor.

Bill enjoyed his final summers on his beloved Birch Island on Upper Saranac Lake celebrating both the marriage of his granddaughter, Cristy Jacobs and his wife, Judy's 90th birthday.

Bill never met a stranger, and was often greeted in the supermarket or on the street by former students, who seemed to always remember their experiences in his classroom with great fondness.

Though age took its toll, Bill was a terrific athlete as a young man, playing football, basketball, tennis and golf. He also coached at all scholastic levels in football and basketball, and worked respectively as a referee and official.

Mr. Butterfield is survived by his wife, Julianne; daughters Amber Jones and Beth Jacobs; son Greg Butterfield; six grandchildren, Spencer, Keith, Cristy, Dana, Morgan and Devon; and three great grandchildren, Addison, Brooklyn and Tucker.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty and his father, Beth and half sister, Eleanor.
